Getting in the Groove

Today, most people in Ohio return to the office. However, my employer has agreed to let everyone continue to work from home full time through the end of June if they so choose. I know many are eager to return to the office, but I’ve found a good rhythm working from home now that the rest of my family is back to their regular routines (out of the house) during the day.

I’m often able to get through some email first thing in the morning before I drop my daughter off at school. Since my laptop is permanently docked at my desk in the house, logging in to handle email is significantly faster than it was before, when it lived in my computer bag. With the lighter traffic, I get home from dropping my daughter off about the same time that I used to arrive at the office. That may all change this week as most people get back to work.

Working from home, I don’t have to remember to pack lunch. I can even cook something on the stovetop or in the oven if I want. I cooked some amazing fresh noodles I picked up at the Worthington Farmer’s Market drive-through earlier this week. With a whole kitchen at my disposal and no coworkers around, there’s no reason to waste time, money, and calories going out to eat. I miss lunch with my coworkers, but we have weekly happy hours on Friday afternoons to catch up, and they are always only a phone call away.

It’s easy to call it quits at 5 pm - that’s when my husband returns home with my daughter. I used to make a point to leave work at 5 pm to pick her up, but he’s helping out there now. I know others who have struggled with work-life balance now that they live where they work. Fortunately, my daughter makes that impossible.

Are you looking forward to going back to the office? What’s changed since you started working from home?
