It's the Little Things

Finishing up my second month working from home, I've had time to notice things around the yard that I never had time to notice before. As I previously mentioned, I strategically set up my new desk at home facing a window overlooking my backyard. I rearranged my bird feeders to enjoy them while I work. I expected to see the usual suspects as my feeders. House finches, Carolina wrens, chickadees, tufted titmice, nuthatches, eastern bluebirds, downy woodpeckers, and a northern flicker frequent our feeders. Little did I know that a yellow-belled sapsucker migrates through our yard every spring. We always wondered why we never saw insects causing the holes in one of our trees - now we know. I've also seen a brown creeper twice. A red-winged blackbird, a wood thrush, and a white-throated sparrow have even stopped by.

This year, I decided to add an oriole feeder and hummingbird feeder to the mix. Those feeders have always seemed a little high maintenance to me, requiring cleaning and refilling every day. With all of the time at home, the commitment seems like less of a burden. I now have seven Baltimore orioles, a rose-breasted grosbeak, and a catbird frequently my jelly and oranges. A house wren has stopped by our new platform feeder. I may have the itch to get back to the woods, but at least I'm enjoying our small backyard more than ever during these trying times.
