New Monitors for the Win

Part of my home office upgrade includes three new, identical monitors. For my new setup, I ordered Sceptre IPS 24 inch monitors. Not only are they a few inches larger than my previous monitors, but they also have an "edgeless" design. They look much sleeker than my old, traditional widescreen monitors.

Technology for home offices has been hard to come by during the pandemic. As most office workers fled to their homes, many left behind webcams, headsets, and even monitors caused shortages of webcams, headsets, and monitors. As they settled in for the long haul, there was a surge in demand for these products, causing shortages. After deciding which monitors to buy, I had to wait for them to come back into stock. Fortunately, I was able to get my monitors from my office during the pandemic, so I wasn't suffering in the meantime.

Two of the three monitors arrived in perfect condition and worked flawlessly. Unfortunately, while one of the three appeared pristine, it would not turn on. Fortunately, they were still in stock at Amazon, and I was able to get a replacement ordered right away. The third one arrived and worked as well as the first two.

They have VESA mounting on the back, allowing me to install them on a standard monitor standard. That was a must-have on my list of qualifications. Even if you don't think you'll want to swap stands in the future, you may find yourself regretting forgoing that flexibility in the future.

Unfortunately, the power cords are less than ideal. Not only are they unreasonably short, but they also use a fat wall wart that makes it impossible to plug them into a surge protector next to another plug or share a standard wall outlet.

They also only have an HDMI and a VGA port. My dock doesn't have more than one HDMI port. However, it has two DisplayPorts. A small investment of two lengthy HMDI to DisplayPort cords later, and I have all of the flexibility I need.

While I love how the "edgeless" design looks, there is no place to put your fingers on the monitor, other than the bottom, when setting them up. I kept the screen protecting film on the monitors while setting up to reduce the likelihood of getting fingerprints on my brand new monitors.

Despite their shortcomings, for the price, I don't think these monitors can be beat. They look great and function well, once I replaced the dud.
